“This commissioned painting depicts out of work people during the Great Depression whose situation had become desperate enough that they had to stand in line to receive a free bowl of soup. Researching old photographs for this project I was struck by the many varied faces, so full of character, very unlike the kinds of faces one sees today. I tried to find models for this painting who looked the part.”
